Workshop: Jessa Fairbrother at The School of Miniclick

For one long weekend this June, from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th, Miniclick are taking over the Eranda Studio at The Photographers’ Gallery, turning the space into a secondary school of photography. The faculty at The School of Miniclick will present their curriculum – a series of talks, workshops, fun and games from a wide range of guest teachers, including David Fathi, Lumine’s Lab, Amak Mahmoodian, Rhiannon Adams, Kevin Meredith and many more.

You can read all about it here.

Our Textiles Department are very pleased to welcome photographic artist Jessa Fairbrother to the team, who will be running a workshop with participants creating new work that will embellish their own photographs with threadwork.

Conversations with my mother

Conversations with my mother

“My interdisciplinary practice is largely concerned with gesture, making explicit the moment when the donor of the gesture and the gaze of the viewer collide. I am fascinated by how we perform ourselves continuously, role-playing our identities responding to the ongoing performance of others. In doing so I search for communal meanings defined and given shape through the presence of a figure – this is mostly my own – and make long-term work about how this writes itself upon the body. The purpose of thread, mark-making and stitch are central, physically piercing and extending the image-object beyond a single time and space.

I did an MA at the University of Westminster in Photographic Studies in 2008-10 and was a lecturer in photography in both higher and further education. Before that I was a journalist, although I started out many years ago trying to be an actress – thankfully this didn’t work out….All of these experiences underpin my work now, fascinated as I am by how to inhabit and convey personal feelings to an unknown audience, and how shared understanding makes an emotional life.”

For The School of Miniclick, Jessa will talk about her own practice, her recent artist book ‘Conversations with My Mother’,  and facilitate participants to make interventions embellishing their own photographs to work more personally with images, using hand stitching. Space on this workshop is limited to 8 people. Please email jim@miniclick.co.uk if you’d like to attend.

Participants should bring their own photographs to stitch on to, but please bear in mind that you will be damaging the original photo, so bring copies of precious images. Images will also be provided to practice on, if you would rather not use your own photos.
