Workshop: Sofia Kathryn Smith at The School of Miniclick

For one long weekend this June, from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th, Miniclick are taking over the Eranda Studio at The Photographers’ Gallery, turning the space into a secondary school of photography. The faculty at The School of Miniclick will present their curriculum – a series of talks, workshops, fun and games from a wide range of guest teachers, including David Fathi, Lumine’s Lab, Amak Mahmoodian, Rhiannon Adams, Kevin Meredith and many more.

You can read all about it here.

In the last few years we’ve done a lot of work involved text and images. For The School of Miniclick, our English Department, headed by Sofia Kathryn Smith, have planned a workshop with participants improving their skills in telling stories with pictures AND words.

Photographer / Writer – An Introduction to Image Making with Photography and Creative Writing.

With two English degrees (in BA English and MA Critical & Creative Writing), Sofia Kathryn Smith has worked closely with The Miniclick Press, heading up the editing team and producing several creative commissions for publication. She has worked as a research assistant for several artists and photographers and regularly produces written work for publication alongside photographs.

Working with photographers, and others from different creative backgrounds, Sofia has learnt that the imaginative process, whether to produce a photograph, a drawing, a poem or a non-fiction piece, doesn’t happen in a vacuum. She has since cultivated several collaborative working relationships and prides herself of having a creative output that is deeply embedded within her personal research.

This workshop aims to use the common language of creative processes to bridge the gap between photography and creative writing by treating them in the same way. After an introduction and some creative writing warmup exercise designed to stimulate the links between image and text, the group will participate in an exercise in creative playfulness, using text and imagery in a game based on Miniclick’s ‘Photographer / Writer / Illustrator’ project of 2015, to create new work which they can take away with them that day.

Inspiration and creativity are the orders of the day. As Ursula K. Le Guin puts so neatly, alone a writer is a Lone Navigator, but as part of a workshop, writers become a Mutinous Crew. Together we can help each other map out a new way of thinking about image making.

This workshop is limited to 10 people – please email jim@miniclick.co.uk to signup.

Bring a pen! All others materials will be provided and participants will receive an exercise book to use on the day.
