Day 5 – The Miniclick Photobook Advent Calendar, 2014

December 5, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Another day and the Grand Miniclick Photobook Advent Calendar rolls on with Jim Stephenson choosing a long-time favourite he finally picked up in book form at Offprint in November. Joachim Schmid’s ‘X Marks the Spot’…    Joachim Schmid has been self-publishing before everyone was self-publishing, initially himself and then subsequently through print-on-demand services. Since the early 80’s he’s published somewhere between 100 and 150 books. Or at least a number higher than we had time to count. A lot. A lot of […]

Day 4 – The Miniclick Photobook Advent Calendar, 2014

December 4, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Day 4 of the Gran Miniclick Photobook Advent Calendar and one of our guest writers, Alex Norton takes us through one of his pick’s from earlier this year. Sam Laughlin’s ‘Frameworks’ from The Velvet Cell… The structures we use to house ourselves have been formed for centuries. We cannot survive without a structure, for what? To place our things in, rest our heads or prevent us from getting wet. A space we live in is undeniably important and can dominate and […]

Publication: Photographer Writer Illustrator

December 3, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Our new project, Photographer Writer Illustrator, involves a playful look into how the interpretation of images and text changes from person to person and how these images and text are connected. 8 different photographers each gave us an image each, which we stripped of it’s context and title before passing it onto a writer. The 8 different writers then created short stories, poems and descriptive text based on the single image they’d be assigned. Finally, to complete the game, the […]

December 2, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Christoph Soeder’s “Clear Cut” is just that. A topographical study of men getting their haircuts in a small barbers in Newport South Wales. image courtesy of A Fine Beginning We were first made aware of Christoph’s book during a visit to Brighton he made with Newport University to talk to a number of practitioners (including Jim and Jack from Miniclick) about their work. This project really stuck in our minds and the book just adds to it even more. The […]

Day 1 – The Miniclick Photobook Advent Calender, 2014

December 1, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Once again, on the run up to Christmas Miniclick are running our Photobook Advent Calendar, where we do a short review of a book we’ve enjoyed this year (mostly from people we’ve worked with at some point). So keep coming back for a daily post, concluding with a big announcement on Christmas Day about a new project we’re launching in 2015. Kicking off the 2014 Photobook Advent Calendar is Glen Erler’s ‘Family Tree’, published by Kehrer. Glen did a talk […]

Review: Jimmy Nelson’s “Before they Pass Away”

November 24, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

Jimmy Nelson’s “Before They Pass Away” received a lot of column inches when it opened at Atlas Gallery last month. A few weeks later our writer and resident exhibition wanderer, Dimitra Kountiou visited to see what the fuss was about and to see, now the dust has settled, if her initial opinions might have dulled a little. The gallery and the artist were both contacted for this review, but neither commented. Strolling in the streets of Marylebone, a huge photograph […]

Interview: Spectrum

November 2, 2014 by Jim Stephenson

This year, during Brighton Photo Fringe for our ‘Another Way of Looking’ programme, we hosted an exhibition of Louis Porter’s ‘The Anatomy of Business’. The show was very kindly sponsored by Spectrum, who printed and mounted the works for us and helped guide us along the way to make sure the final prints were as good as they possible could be. We interviewed them about their unique insight into what goes into an exhibition and who is doing what right […]
