19/06/2013 – Miniclick & NP20 in Hackney

We’re very pleased to have been invited by Newport’s BA documentary photography course to help them put on a night at The Attic in Hackney Picture House, London focusing on the theme of “emerging talent”.

Instead of focusing on their own work, this year’s graduates have chosen to open up the floor and put on a night that combines a series of short talks from photographers who have, at one stage or another, been handed the label ’emerging’ and a panel discussion to debate the meaning of the term.

Miniclick have curated the short talks (as we did in Liverpool for LOOK/13) and Miniclick founder, Jim Stephenson, will also chair the panel discussion afterward. The panel discussion features Olivier Laurent (BJP), Jon Levy (FOTO8), Rachel Segal Hamilton (Ideas Tap) and photographer Jo Metson Scott. ‘The Miniclick Shorts’, the short talks, will feature….

Jordi Ruiz Cirera

Jordi Ruiz Cirera is a documentary photographer from Barcelona based in London. He first studied design at Elisava school, before moving to London to attend the MA Photojournalism and

Documentary Photography at the LCC, from where he graduated with distinction in 2011.

Jordi’s work has been awarded and shortlisted in several international competitions, including the DB Award for Photography, the AOP Student Photographer of the Year, the POYi, the Lucie Awards, and recently the Taylor-Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize

His work has been exhibited widely, and published in different printed and online medias including the Sunday Times Magazine, the BJP, Il Corriere della Sera, Gara, Wired or Photo8 story of the week

Jordi is currently represented by the German agency Laif.

Alex Catt

After graduating from the University of Brighton in 2012, Alex Catt obtained a grant for a seven-week artist residency in Spain where he produced a series of photographs titled ‘As water returns to the sea’. His photographs are the result of various wanderings and journeys, and show a close affinity to nature. Currently based in the south of England he is making work around the New Forest and its histories.

Jocelyn Allen

Jocelyn Allen (b.1988 Birmingham, England) graduated from the BA in Photographic Art at Newport in 2010. Exhibition highlights include the Guernsey Photography Festival and Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and Mediterranean in Greece. In 2012 she was selected as one of the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward – Emerging Photographers and is in the process of printing her first self-published book.

Allen currently lives in London, where she is studying for an MA in Photography at the LCC and experimenting with video, as well as continuing her photographic practice.

Jo Metson Scott

Jo Metson Scott is a portrait and documentary photographer whose work highlights the relationship between people and their communities. Working predominantly on film and inspired by the way people live and express themselves to her camera, Jo’s work has a strongly subject driven approach often leading to an exploration of the less palpable elements of life – such as morality or imagination. Her subtle, elegant images capture softness in even the hardest subjects.

Jo’s work has been commissioned by a variety of organisations including The New York Times, The Telegraph,  Another Magazine, and The Photographer’s Gallery.  In 2013 “The Grey Line” was published by Dewi Lewis.

Sam A Harris

Sam A Harris is a photographer based in London, UK. Since graduating in 2012 from the University of Brighton he has assisted various photographers, as well as contributing to online magazine CULT, and continuing his own photographic practice; the latter including an artist residency in Stavanger, Norway. Thematically his pensive but subtle work touches on issues of life and death, and quietly asks questions of our place within the world.

The Attic, Hackney Picture House, London.  Wednesday 19th June 2013.  Free entry (doors open 18.30, event starts 19.30). More info on NP20’s website.
