This November, we are joined by the artist and educator Kelly O’Brien who will be sharing work from her ongoing project ‘No Rest For The Wicked’.

Miniclick Bristol x The RPS: Kelly O’Brien

Kelly O’Brien is an artist and educator. Her work is concerned with the photographic relationship to absence; investigating how personal lived experiences and invisible political histories can be interrogated to begin to uncover new visual territories and possibilities.

Kelly has been the recipient of several awards, and her work has been widely exhibited and published. With over 10 years of experience as a creative labourer, Kelly has worked as a community arts facilitator and producer, collaborating on projects which focus on radical social justice. She is also a lecturer in photography, having worked in partnership with universities and art institutions in the UK and internationally.

Through her practice and research, Kelly inquires into how an expanding photographic documentary practice can be developed to begin to communicate the pervasive experiences of class and gender, along with the complex politics of identity that are embedded within it. Through a presentation of her ongoing project No Rest For The Wicked, Kelly shares how she has embraced such a practice, one that intersects her personal 15-year-old photographic archive, with experimental collaboration and a visual
auto-ethnographic research process. Consequently, in an attempt to enable her to reimagine a more nuanced visual articulation of experiences of the working class women in her family.

No Rest For The Wicked is an intersection of the personal and the political. It speaks on paid and unpaid labour, on being both an insider and outsider, on class myths and on being intergenerationally absolutely knackered.
